Featured Project: Preserving America’s History – The USS Midway

AMP United is proud to help preserve one of America’s most iconic symbols of freedom — the USS Midway. Through expert craftsmanship and careful planning, our team is ensuring this historic aircraft carrier remains shipshape for future generations to experience, explore, and enjoy.
We take pride in preserving our nation's history and one of America’s living symbols of freedom: The USS Midway.
Perhaps one of the most iconic aircraft carriers in U.S. Navy history, the USS Midway (CV-41) was commissioned September 10, 1945 and decommissioned April 11, 1992, which makes her the longest serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century–serving 47 years. After a stint in Bremerton, Washington, the Midway opened as the USS Midway Museum in 2004 in San Diego, California. As of 2012, she hosts 1 million visitors annually.
Combining ingenuity with highly skilled tradesman and excellence in execution, all of AMP United’s work was performed while the USS Midway was pierside, allowing the museum to stay fully operational–maintaining her status as the #1 “Thing to Do” in San Diego via TripAdvisor.
AMP United preserved her freeboard, mast, and superstructure, and has also installed non-skid surfaces on her flight deck, catwalks, and internal decks, and abated a bilge. We are performing all kinds of pipe and structural repairs as the work continues, ensuring that she stays young and beautiful.
Len Santiago, Chief Engineer and Director of Engineering and Restoration of the USS Midway commented on AMP United’s work.
“A turn-key, 1 stop, scaffolding, rust busting, preservation, painting team was exactly what we were needing for the entire Midway superstructure to the top of the mast down to the waterline around the entire hull of the ship. USS Midway has turned 80 years young, 20 years as a museum ship downtown San Diego hosting over 1,000,000 guests a year, 350 civilian events, 350 military events and 55,000 school children. We needed a fresh look for the next 20 years downtown San Diego!”
“From initial planning to daily operations, the AMP United team has been providing quality work since the start in 2023 while the USS Midway stays open 363 days a year, 7 days a week to our guests. We have not been able to do this work that is normally done in a dry dock which is not available to USS Midway. This is the first ship wide restoration of the ship, top to bottom, bow to stern since USS Midway’s last shipyard availability in Yokosuka, Japan 1986 and the AMP United team has provided the support like the ship was on active duty getting ready to go back to sea,” says Santiago.
“The AMP United Team is very professional, safety conscious, constant communicators and truly dedicated to providing a quality product that not only represents USS Midway but the Navy and the AMP United reputation of being professionals on the ship waterfront. AMP United has become a critical shipmate for our primary mission: ‘Preserve the USS Midway and the Legacy of those who have and are serving. Inspire and educate future generations, and entertain our museum guests.’ We continue with the AMP United team preserving the ship hull through 2025 and 2026 as we prepare to build the largest veteran park on the west coast of the United States: Freedom Park at Burnham Navy Pier! AMP United’s dedicated hands will have helped us build the landscape of a 10 acre park for the public.”
